- The new gazebo is the perfect finishing touch!
Everyone at The Brightwell has been completely overwhelmed by the generosity of so many supporters in helping us develop our new outdoor space, not only with financial donations but with their time and materials too. The end result is so much more than we could have hoped for! The finishing touch this week has been the completion of the new gazebo which looks fantastic and will act as much needed shade when the hot weather comes next year. Many of those living with neurological conditions suffer from the ability to self-regulate their body temperature in the heat, so this new shaded area will be a great help. We would like to thank the team from Craig West Turf and Landscaping and the group of apprentices rom Rolls Royce who worked so hard when erecting this new structure. We will be holding an official opening in the Spring and will invite all those who have contributed. Thank you all. - Our New Oxygen Generation Equipment and Plant Room
Many of our Brightwell followers have asked for details about the new, recently installed Oxygen Generation equipment. This new system is working extremely well. The reason for this investment was to give us independence from BOC and their rising prices. This also ensures that we have full independence in terms of supply. This system feeds our existing Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber and will have sufficient capacity to feed a second chamber which is planned for the future. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who supported us, enabling us to make this significant investment. We will be giving updated numbers in the near future about the number of Service Users enjoying the benefits of Oxygen Therapy. The smooth running of the department is very much dependent on our team of knowledgeable and dedicated volunteers, for which we are exceptionally grateful. Below is a selection of photos showing the new equipment in the plant room.
- Oxygen Generation - building for the Brightwell’s future.
As many of you will be aware, our focus on Oxygen Generation has been significant both from a fundraising point of view plus manpower and expertise in ensuring the project runs in a timely and cost-effective manner. We would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard raising money towards the £90,000 cost. We are still looking for £28,000 to complete the project. By generating our own oxygen, we will be reducing our costs and carbon footprint. Supply issues will be eliminated as will any risk that comes with the storing of pressurised oxygen as the system will provide plenty on demand, even when we add a second chamber. From Thursday 21st July the Oxygen Department will be closed as we are having our new Oxygen generation equipment installed and will reopen on Monday 1st August. - Some of the conditions seen at The Brightwell
Over the past few weeks, the charity has received several requests from existing and potential supporters to find out more about the people we support and the conditions they live with. The primary condition seen is Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The West of England MS Therapy Centre is the main charity under The Brightwell umbrella. It was established over 37 years ago, originally in Nailsea and then moved to its new location in Bradley Stoke, in 2012. The focus of the Brightwell isto support those living with chronic neurological conditions. Over the years, people with other chronic conditions have come to the centre for therapies, including oxygen therapy. As can be seen in the illustration above, people living with or having fought cancer make up the second largest group after MS, closely followed by those living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). 5% of those who come to the centre have a variety of other neurological conditions including Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Parkinson’s, Stroke and Fibromyalgia, to mention a few. These figures are based on data from 2021. The Brightwell opened its doors in May 2020 following the initial lockdown and remained open during subsequent pandemic restrictions. It will be interesting to see the data for 2022, although it is anticipated that the percentage figures will be similar, with a higher volume of participants. The Brightwell is also delighted to welcome those with short term/acute conditions such as muscle injury and broken bones, who benefit from the oxygen therapy as part of their healing process. Many of those needing immediate intervention come from professional sports backgrounds including rugby, cricket and football. As can be seen from the list of conditions a new addition is for those living with the long-term effects of Covid referred to as “Long Covid”. The anecdotal evidence regarding the benefits of using the hyperbaric chamber are very positive so far. A number of studies are looking into these benefits, and the findings from this research will be of great interest to all those living with these symptoms Below is a breakdown of the numbers coming to us for physiotherapy and oxygen. The physiotherapy team are specialist neuro-physios, with a fully adapted physiotherapy area. If you would like to find out more about the therapies available, please visit www.thebrightwell.org.uk

- Oxygen Generation Our Fundraising Priority
The Brightwell is very fortunate to offer Oxygen Therapy as its USP. More than 500 sessions on average, are offered each month to members living with neurological conditions as well as to those battling cancer and other chronic ailments. We have also been able to support professional athletes in speeding up their recovery from injury including well-known local cricket, football, and rugby players. The Oxygen Therapy takes place in a Barochamber; this is an airtight vessel just like a commercial aircraft and like an aircraft the air pressure inside it is controlled. Depending on what you find comfortable you will breathe pure oxygen at between one and a half to two times normal atmospheric pressure. The benefit of breathing oxygen in a pressurised environment is that your body can absorb more oxygen. Although the damage caused by neurological conditions cannot be prevented or cured by oxygen therapy, many people throughout the world find that it reduces some of their symptoms.
